What a set of climbing holds costs
Buying holds in matched sets keeps a route consistent in shape and colour. Across the catalogue's PU sets, a hold works out at £4 to £73, typically about £41. Some examples:
| Set | Holds | Price | Per hold |
|---|
| Gritstone Crack 2 XXL | 2 | £74 | £37 |
| Gritstone M/L Slots | 3 | £75 | £25 |
| Gritstone Thin Edges M | 4 | £84 | £21 |
| Gritstone Single Pebbles 3XS | 5 | £34 | £7 |
| Gritstone Edges XS | 6 | £34 | £6 |
| Gritstone Subtle Grooves L-XL | 8 | £71 | £9 |
What makes one hold cost more than another
Size is the biggest factor. A hold's price follows how much material it uses, so footholds and crimps are the cheapest items in any range while big jugs, slopers and pinches cost the most.
Material comes next. Polyurethane is used for everyday holds. Macros are large features, so Rockcity makes them from vacuum-thermoformed ABS: as stiff as fibreglass under climbing load but about half the weight and far less brittle. Volumes are made from birch plywood in Hull and are priced by size and finish.
Texture matters for competition and modern bouldering. Dual-texture holds and macros carry coarser grip on the intended contact zones and a smoother finish elsewhere, which helps setters show how a problem should be climbed.
Lifespan is worth weighing against price. Commercial PU holds typically last 5 to 10 years in a busy gym with regular cleaning, and VTF ABS macros last longer still. See the climbing hold materials comparison for the differences.
